Reading construction drawings is the first practical skill an estimator needs. Knowing what each drawing shows, how to measure from it, and which scale to use is essential for accurate quantity take-offs.

Drawing types
Plans: Top-down view showing room layouts, dimensions, and wall positions. Use for floor areas, wall lengths, and foundation sizes.
Sections: Vertical cut-through showing floor-to-ceiling heights, foundation depths, and roof construction.
Elevations: External face views showing window and door positions, cladding areas, and roof pitches.
Details: Close-up views of junctions and connections at larger scales.
Miniature example
From a 1:50 floor plan, the estimator measures: room length 120 mm on paper = 6 m actual. Width 80 mm = 4 m actual. Floor area = 24 m². At 1:20 scale detail, reveals the floor build-up: 150 mm insulation, 75 mm screed, tile finish.
Common mistakes
- Using the wrong scale when measuring (reading 1:100 as 1:50)
- Not checking the revision number against the drawing register
- Measuring only from plans without checking sections for heights and depths
