Standard units
Cubic metre (m³): Concrete, excavation, bulk materials
Square metre (m²): Flooring, wall finishes, roofing, formwork
Linear metre (m): Skirting, drainage, cables, copings
Number (nr): Windows, doors, sanitary fittings, ironmongery
Tonnes (t): Steel reinforcement, hardcore, aggregates
Hours (hr): Labour time, plant operation
Miniature example
A take-off produces: concrete 12.764 m³, floor finish 47.83 m², skirting 23.4 m. Rounded for the estimate: 12.76 m³ concrete (to two decimals), 47.8 m² floor finish (to one decimal), 23 m skirting (rounded to nearest whole metre). The supplier quotation is in these rounded units.
Common mistakes
- Inconsistent rounding — rounding some items to one decimal and others to three without reason
- Rounding up waste allowances after already including a percentage waste addition
- Using the wrong unit for the item (e.g. measuring drainage in square metres instead of linear metres)
