Material summary.

A material summary is a consolidated list of every material required for a construction project. It helps the contractor order materials in the right quantities, at the right time, and within budget.

Who this guide is for

Contractors ordering materials, site managers tracking deliveries, and quantity surveyors checking material quantities against the estimate.

What the summary contains

Each material is listed with: description, specification, quantity required, unit, waste allowance, total quantity to order, estimated unit cost, and total cost. Materials are typically grouped by work section or by the construction phase when they are needed.

Common mistakes

• Forgetting to add waste allowances, then running short on site
• Listing materials without specifications, leading to wrong products being ordered
• Not phasing the material summary to match delivery timing — materials arriving too early or too late
